I ordered the hardcover version of this book, expecting to receive the *entire* book -- both volumes. What arrived was Volume II only, as explicitly indicated on the first printed page of the book I received. The Amazon description makes no mention that this book is Volume II only. The Amazon description implies that both Volume I and II are being offered. In fact, the "Look Inside" images clearly show the title and table of contents of Volume I. But, nope, Volume I is not there -- not even misbound in the wrong location in the book -- it is simply not there. Ham and cheese without the ham.Well, the index in the book is complete. It covers both Volumes I and II, and includes cross-referenced page numbers. Unfortunately, 90% of the narrative portion of the book is missing page numbers, which renders the index largely ineffective for its intended purpose.The Amazon description of this book states "To ensure a quality reading experience, this work has been proofread and republished using a format that seamlessly blends the original graphical elements with text in an easy-to-read typeface." That's very eloquent; but umm, well, I don't think so. The book is clearly a scanned version of the original tome housed within the Bodleian Library (Rhodes House; Oxford). If "original graphical elements" refers to the smudges, streaks, misprints, and random splodges in the original book, then indeed this book blends those graphical elements quite well. As to the "easy-to-read typeface," perhaps Queen Victoria found the text easy to read. I would think that a book "being culturally important and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it" deserves being re-typeset -- as the Amazon description implies -- to render the contents more readable.In an effort to support "hands across the sea" and all that, I gave this book 3 stars instead of the lesser number it rightfully deserves. I would advise any reader who is interested in reading the *entire* New Voyage Round the World, to go elsewhere -- as I shall because I am intrigued by the book's promised narrative. Properly produced -- and complete -- I can easy see this book deserving at least 4 stars, and maybe 5. This particular book offering does have a reasonably pretty cover, which is about all I can say about the volume which I purchased. I have a few books on William Dampier. I ordered this anticipating an enjoyable Read. While his detail and descriptions of animals and plants he comes across it reads like blah blah blah blah we met some people drove them off took their livestock took their canoes took a couple of slaves and moved on. It's like reading about a motorcycle gang going from place to place killing people or driving them from their homes stealing their livestock and taking their canoes except it's happening on the high seas.
