I wanted so badly to fall in love with the book, which is essentially the origin story and ensuing adventures of someone with a lifetime of tales, but ultimately, a lifetime of tales is all the book amounted to. It's written in such a convoluted manner that leaves you wondering if any of it was actually real or just self-aggrandizing drivel. It somehow managed to make such wonderful and fascinating stories boring.It wasn't all bad - there were parts that were gripping and made me feel like I was there along with the author in whatever far-flung land was on the docket, but after half a page, the book would just to some completely other random, normally insignificant, time in the author's life. Half the book was what I want to read about when I pick up a book like this, and the other half felt like it was included just to be written.Worth a read if you're interested in the stories and can put up with the whiplash structure and lackluster writing. This is a book about the life of Robert Young Pelton. He is alive and kicking and is extremely candid about himself in this book. You can see the back story about his life and really see how he rose up from nothing in very difficult circumstances to become a multi millionaire and then to ultimately become one of the greatest adventurers of the last 100 years. The book is about adventure but it is way more than that too. The author is pretty brutally honest about things and pulls no punches in this. There is zero attempt to seek to hide the warts of life. If you have ever thought about someone (or are someone) who was or is in a broken situation, abused, and in a bad spot, but you have a good head on your shoulders... this is just one example of one person and how they capitalized on what they had to make something good of it all.
